Advertisement: A useful training hike close to Taipei during good weather. The hike is mostly stairs, so it will likely not replicate the terrain you are likely to see on your (presumably high mountain) trip. You'll get some good views of the city (Taipei 臺北 and Tamsui 淡水) on the peaks too, especially from Mt. Xiangtian and Miantian 向面天山 since it sits at the western edge of the mountain group and has an unblocked view.

Difficulty: The full traverse is 15 mi (24 km) and 5500 ft (1700 m) of elevation. The western half we did, bailing at Siaoyoukeng 小油坑 is about 5.5 mi (8.5 km) and 3000 ft (900 m) of elevation. The second time, finishing at the visitor's center at Miaopu 苗圃, is 8 mi and 4600 ft of elevation.
Preparation: Most sources have you start or end on the western side at 清天宮登山口, which is closer to public transit (and is officially on the Taipei Grand Hike, if you care about that sort of thing). The trail is more direct from 興福寮登山口, which you can cab to if you start there. Once you come down from Mt. Cising 七星山 to Lengshuiku 冷水堀, that is roughly your last convenient place to bail. After summitting Mt. Zhugao 竹篙山 it is possible to make your way to the bus stop at Qingtiangang Grassland 擎天崗大草原. The eastern trailhead is at Fengguizui 風櫃嘴. There are few buses here: here is the closest one with limited buses (check the timetables), and one further away with more.
It often rains in the afternoon on Yangmingshan, so bring rain gear. The first time our plans were cut short by rain (did not feel like pushing on); there are many bus stations within the park for descending.
The peaks are, from east to west: 向天山,面天山,大屯山西峯,大屯山南風,大屯山,七星山,七星山東峯,竹篙山,石梯嶺,頂山.
