Haleakala Crater [August 16, 2015]

Advertisement:  A polychrome crater makes one feel as if one is on an alien planet; clouds roll in along a gap in the rim and cinder cones dot the crater floor.

Difficulty: Variable; one can go down as far as one likes. We turned back after 2.5 miles and 1500 feet of descent, but I would like to do a longer backpacking trip into the crater someday.

Preparation:None.

Summary: A really beautiful crater. 4/5
