Difficulty: 22 miles, 5000 feet of elevation gain round trip

Preparation: Permits necessary and should be reserved due to high demand. This is often called one of the most dangerous hikes in America (which isn't super meaningful because safety depends on preparation and decision-making and what counts as a hike?). It may rain on any given day. If it does, the trail can become very unsafe due to flash floods, rising streams, and unstable muddy cliffsides. See this page for more safety tips.

Summary: The scenery on this hike is beautiful and the beach at the end well worth the effort. This is one of my favorite hikes; if I were to do it again I would spend an entire day just exploring the area around the beach. 5/5
