Difficulty: 3 miles, 50 feet of elevation gain
Preparation: None. The route is: take a bus to Bitoujiao, hike up, you can stop in the town for lunch if you like, and then walk east (think counterclockwise around the island) toward Nanya Rocks. You'll stop by various towns on the way. Just hop on a bus or train back to the city when you're ready to go back.
Possible variations are: start a little further east/south at Dragon Caves 龍洞 instead, or continue onward toward Jinguashi 金瓜石 (an old mine, now a historical area) and 九份 (a mountain town with an "old street" full of food) and climb a mountain if you still have energy.
Buses: The following information is subject to change. There are various ways to get to Bitoujiao (or any of the other coastal destinations, e.g. Nanya or Dragon Caves) from Taipei: the most direct and fastest is the 1811 國光 ("Kuo-Kuang") bus from Taipei Main Station (toward 羅東 Luodong). However, they only run five times a day (timetable here). Tell the driver where you want to get off. As of 5/9/2017, the bus picks up at the Zhengzhou stop at Taipei Main Station: it's near the subway M1 exit and it's on the north side of Taipei Main Station on Civic Boulevard 市民大道 (Google Maps link).
Summary: A tour of the northeast coast of Taiwan. 4/5
